Unlike SDR video signals, which have very set levels for contrast and color, HDR comes in a variety of versions. The only question is what type of HDR this content comes in.

While the vast majority of 1080p content and some 4K content is still SDR, most new 4K content (and many modern remastered versions of films) is HDR. The signal tells each pixel to get brighter, darker, or more colorful. HDR is a set of video formats that send much more information about each pixel to a screen than standard dynamic range, or SDR, video. Expanded capabilities require expanded video signals, and that's where high dynamic range (HDR) and wide color gamut come in. Those limitations have been shattered over the last few years, with TVs now capable of far exceeding the contrast and color limits of the past. TV calibration has historically focused on tuning TVs to match contrast and color based on certain video signal standards, taking into account the limitations of home theater display technology. We also have a Konica Minolta CS-200 spectroradiometer, the little brother of the CS-2000 mentioned above, for additional testing when necessary. They don't just let calibrators tweak TVs to look better, they let us measure television performance with a level of precision home users just can't reach.

One such device is the Konica-Minolta CS-2000 spectroradiometer, a very bulky meter that costs over $28,000.īy the way, this is what we use to test TVs in PC Labs: a Klein K-10A colorimeter, a Murideo SIX-G signal generator, and CalMAN. These colorimeters need to be maintained and calibrated themselves, usually by measuring and adjusting their readings compared against even more advanced and precise equipment. These devices are tied together with SpectraCal's CalMAN software, a calibration and measurement suite that also costs hundreds or thousands of dollars depending on the functionality needed. The SpectraCal C6 color meter is available for $700, while the much more precise Klein K-10A is almost ten times as much (and even more advanced meters can cost about as much as a luxury car). The DVDO AVLab and Murideo Fresco 6-G signal generators can be found for $1,400 and $2,500 respectively. This equipment generally costs more than any television you're shopping for.
This is more than just whites, reds, greens, and blues for meters to measure signal generators come loaded with dozens of test patterns and charts for both visually adjusting and automatically measuring TV pictures. These devices output very precise video signals to a television for calibration. That's where the other vital calibrator tool, the signal generator, comes in. Different set-top boxes, media hubs, and Blu-ray players can process video in slightly different ways, and the smallest change in that signal can completely throw off the calibration process. You can't accurately measure what a television is putting out if you can't be absolutely certain what signal it's receiving, though. These meters can determine both luminance (the amount of light) and color, which are the two fundamental aspects of any television picture. Devices like the SpectraCal C6 and Klein K-10A colorimeters measure exactly how much and what kind of light is emitted from a television.
Tools of the TradeĬalibrators don't use many tools, but the few they depend on are expensive, rare, and vital to the process. ISF also holds a seminar for certification on a semi-monthly basis across the world. ISF works with television manufacturers and industry alliances to define picture quality standards and both measurement and calibration processes. Silver and ISF have been the biggest names in TV calibration in decades, and ISF certification is one of the major indicators that a calibrator knows what they're doing. Your TV might even have an ISF Calibrated picture mode buried in its menus, and that mode is probably the best start toward getting an accurate, detailed viewing experience.

has influenced the entire industry in how to perfect television pictures and what to let users adjust themselves to fix problems. That isn't an exaggeration the founder of Imaging Science Foundation, Inc. Joel Silver is the father of television calibration. Here at PCMag, in our lab, we use the same ISF evaluation techniques and metering equipment to test and review televisions.

Professional calibration is an expensive service usually reserved for custom home theater setups, and requires both technical expertise and specialized gear. To really dive deep into the many settings necessary to get the best possible color accuracy, however, professional calibration by an ISF-certified technician is recommended.
